Awww... thanks Diane! It was a wonderful birthday, and the contest made a great day even more spectacular.
And I don't know why you would shy off the contests. You write well, and the challenge is worth it regardless of whether you're story's picked. :)
Short form writing exercises are great, but as you know I tend to get to the party late in Janet's comments as it is, and they're so copious I can't keep up even on an ordinary day (I'm taking this week off altogether). On contest days, it's literally beyond my ability to manage at all, and I shut down. So it's not a confidence thing, it's just a choice - I don't even read comments on contest days, there's just not enough time in a day! :)
