Titanic Jewels

The jewels of the Titanic (not including that tacky Heart of the Ocean pendant, we hope) may be coming to a city not exactly near you.

"The purpose of the exhibition is to show the public the wonder of exploration" ...  (Wait.  It's not wealth porn?)  Whatever the reason, the preservation is remarkable, and the work intricate, fine, and rather lovely.  Makes me want to go drool at the Faberge' we have locally again.

Oh, and I thought the purpose of the exhibit was to eke further profit from the looting of a massive grave site. Will the jewels be returned to their owner's heirs? Did Titanic Inc. recover her remains for a decent burial? Did they also recover artifacts reflecting the not so wealthy dead?

Exhibit Hall B: Steerage, where one may see such fascinating artifacts as: a vial of virulent TB, mouldy potato skins that were someone's last meal, the torn blouse of that lone servant girl,...

The potato skins were baked twice and sold as appetizers at TGI Friday's during the early 1990s, and the poor people (they had no stuff, actually) did not restore as pretty as the platinum and diamonds ...

Ha! I think that's why I stopped eating at Friday's the pall of sudden salty death that clung to the tater skins. That and the flair.

Thanks for your mild response to my rant. I was posessed for a moment by the spirit of angry debate that pops up on SUBARCH-L, the listserv for underwater archaeologists.

Nothing to thank me for, I just assumed I wasn't the butt of the rant, so stood aside and watched its grandeur. It *is* grave robbery, really - but of course we draw lines and we draw lines. Me, I'm fascinated to watch people pick Otzi apart like a fetal pig, because what can be learned is so inspiring I can't stand it - but it's not like it never occurs to me, as we dissect mummies and bones and graves the world over, how desecration is a part of such learning.

Anyway, nobody made potato skins like dad's. So they can all flair-off.
