What was especially amusing to me when watching this show was the evidence of "knock off" swords from antiquity. Some of the +Ulfberh+t's were poor quality +Ulfberht+'s...slightly irregular counterfeits. For some reason, the idea that mankind has always been (predictably) ripping off the consumer brought me perverse comfort...
A captivating "subplot" to the story, indeed! Also nice to know - if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, at least there's always been a brand out there worth ripping off ...
Human ingenuity was not invented in the Industrial Revolution, and I am endlessly fascinated by the history of our sophistication and accomplishment. If you liked this, you might also find the NOVA special on Otzi - the Iceman Murder Mystery - worth your time. There is some information about a copper ax which is genuinely amazing.
